Investment into Neowa: Repowering wind energy

Vidia Climate Fund I invests in neowa GmbH, one of the leading providers of wind power decommissioning and adjacent services in Germany. The investment marks the first add-on acquisition for its wind services platform.

  • Market opportunity
Growing repowering, decommissioning and service demand in mature wind markets
  • Company
neowa with outstanding market position to meet demand and expand service range

  • Value creation opportunity
Significant organic development potential and complementary to Ven-to

By the end of 2023, around 30,000 wind turbines produced 31% of German electricity, which corresponds to the average annual electricity consumption of around 40 million German households. More than 10,000 of those turbines are already at the end of their expected life cycle of around 20 years. Older turbines have an average power rating of less than 1.5 MW per turbine compared to >5 MW of new turbines. In Germany and comparable markets with a large portion of mature wind parks, the technological development renders the repowering and replacement of old turbines a crucial task for the transition to green energy.

In the light of these developments, Vidia Climate Fund I is set to further the scale-up of wind power with its investment in neowa, the first add-on transaction to its wind services platform. neowa is a key player in the German wind power decommissioning market, particularly for repowering projects. With its steadfast commitment to quality and safety in decommissioning and materials management, neowa has established itself as a trusted partner for OEMs and owners of large wind parks.

Founded in 2014, with locations in Luneburg and Bremen, neowa serves clients across Germany and neighboring countries. Starting from its established core of wind power decommissioning, neowa is now expanding its service portfolio to meet the evolving needs of customers in adjacent areas.

Wind power at scale is driving decarbonization and electrification

neowa is an ideal addition to Vidia’s wind services platform centered on Ven-to, which was acquired in June 2024. Building a strong base for joint development, the service and customer portfolios of both companies complement each other, not least with high quality standards.

“For its growing customer base, neowa isn’t just a supplier of decommissioning services but a reputable project manager with a deep understanding of wind services and materials management”, says Stephan Rosarius, Founding Partner at Vidia. “This is what makes neowa the first choice for its customers and a key enabler in the repowering market. We are looking forward to partner with the neowa team and its founder to scale repowering activities in Germany.”

neowa’s next development phase

Leveraging their expertise and excellent reputation in the German wind power market, neowa and Vidia aim to broaden the portfolio of services and expand into new geographical markets to satisfy growing customer demand. This includes a strong focus on scaling the organization from day 1, the onboarding of additional experienced personnel, and evolving internal processes.

Reflecting the collaborative spirit between neowa and Ven-to, the companies intend to selectively acquire and partner with other specialized service providers to complement both the existing service portfolio and the geographic reach.

”At some point you realize that the upcoming steps in the company’s development is not possible with just any partner. Fortunately, that’s exactly when I met Vidia and Stephan Rosarius. Spirit, goals and values of a highly professional and empathetic Vidia team perfectly matched neowa’s culture. This enables Vidia and neowa to profitably expand our value creation and to accelerate internationalization. Our partnership will be driven by our joint focus on decarbonization.” says Frank J. Kroll, founder of neowa.
